I am currently seeking representation for my debut novel. At 150K words, The Seas Between Us, is a family saga, broken into five sections, and is told in multiple POVs. From Lady Astor’s ballroom to the speakeasies of Harlem, from the horse tracks of Brighton Beach to the Indy 500 and from Civil War battlefields to trenches of France, The Seas Between Us, is a sweeping family saga that spans centuries, continents and the great beyond to reveal how every person is connected and how every person has a purpose.
At the age of ten, Anna already knew she wasn’t like the rest of her family. They took their Comet Pills. Not frizzy haired, insomniac and aspiring poet, Anna. Bought on Mott Street and guaranteed to save you from Halley’s Comet, her four siblings obediently washed it down with a gulp of Papa’s homemade wine and went to bed, but Anna wanted to experience the world ending night, May 10, 1910, with her own eyes. She writes her first suicide note, sneaks out of her house in Manhattan, and finds out that people have more fun when faced with annihilation than faced with another day of routine.
A first generation American, Anna is caught between the voices of old social mores concerning issues of woman’s rights, sexuality, mental illness, immigration, and war, and the new voices challenging them. Driven to the brink of madness by her undiagnosed bi-polar disorder and in love with a Catholic priest, Anna makes bad decision after bad decision, (I did have fun though, didn’t I?), which leads to a life altering event.
As Anna sits in a psychiatric hospital, her family visits, sharing memories and revealing secrets. Is it to help Anna recover or to clear their own consciences?
